You see a beautiful template on your favorite template website and think “YES! This is how I want my site to look!” but when you install it, it doesn’t look the same at all.
Sometimes that’s because complicated site designs rely on widgets, plugins, and other special pieces to accomplish their visual task. Sometimes, it’s all about the photography.
Due to copyright law (the same law that protects your own writing, thoughts, and work) they can’t include the images. It’s not so much to lure you in but to show you the possibilities. Imagine if they did include them-your site would look like every other site from that template and that wouldn’t do your brand any favors for sure.
What can I do to make my site pretty like the demo?
If it’s the photography that isn’t living up to your expectations, you simply need to get better photos. When possible, you should absolutely use your own photos as it builds trust and reflects you in your business. Even if your photography skills aren’t anything to write home about, you can always hire a pro (like me!) to capture your vision and deliver amazing images that will uplevel your site.
Another option is to simply buy stock photos. Now-there is a TON of BAD stock photography out there! The last thing you want is to have photography that turns off your ideal customer so it’s important to be strategic and intentional when you choose your images.
If you do buy stock, make sure they fit the visual style of your business and feel authentic, as people are turned off by images they feel are clearly stock as it comes across as fake and uncaring. In turn, that erodes trust and pushes them further from buying instead of closer.
Where can I find great stock photos?
The great news is that these days there are many great options for finding fresh stock photography that doesn’t feel like stuffy corporate stock AND doesn’t break the bank!
