It’s a funny thing how we seemingly make this so incredibly complicated. We think that someone else has the answers, someone else can tell us our target market or that we can figure out what works for someone else and make it work for us.
While that works for a lot of things, it doesn’t work for this.
Who your customer is is an incredibly personal thing as what you’re doing is unique to you. Therefore while you can learn from others, your exact mix is going to be a little bit different.
There are really only 4 things you need to know in order to reach your would be customers:
- Who you are
- What you do
- Who they are
- What they want
If you know who they are (like really know them), you can find them.
If you know what they want, you can speak to them.
If you know what you do, you can connect with them.
If you know who you are, you can help them.
It’s that simple and that hard.
This set of pieces creates a unique mixture because it starts with the most unique part — you! Then you add in the work you’re uniquely suited to do, who needs what you do, and what they really want in life. What you end up with is a blend that is uniquely yours and will influence how you communicate with your customers.
Think of it like having the same conversation only with two completely different people. One, let’s say your best friend, is laughing, nodding along, and is completely in step with you. Another, let’s say, is a complete stranger who doesn’t understand where you’re coming from or where you’re going so they just sort of stare.
Knowing your customer is like talking with your best friend. It’s effortless, you share from the heart, and you build a lasting relationship based on trust and mutual interest. If you don’t know your customer, it’s like talking to a stranger who has no clue what you’re talking about and just wants to walk away.
I believe that knowing your customer deeply is an integral piece to having a successful company. Sure, you can make it with generalizations but if you really want to make an impact, you’ve got to know them inside and out.
I’m actually in the process of developing a really in depth guide to understanding your customer for my branding work with my clients. For me, I can’t develop an intentional, strategic brand for you if I don’t know these same pieces. I want you to be incredibly successful and know that having this foundation firm so we can build on it will make a powerful difference. Together, we develop a highly individualized customer persona and customer avatar to guide you forward.
I make more than beautiful designs, I craft the pieces that will speak to the soul of your customer.
If you’re looking for more than just a pretty design and want the power of 15+ years experience working for you, let’s talk! I have openings for branding + design work starting in April.
